Walking Holidays
Walking in Morocco takes you through spectacular and varied landscapes including lush oases, rocky mountains, sand dunes and more.
Contrasts in scenery and geology occur thanks to all the Geological Eras being represented in the region. Because you are accompanied by our expert guides, you benefit from their expert knowledge of geography, geology, culture and wildlife that you encounter.
Taroudant is ideally placed for easy access to some of the most scenic walks you could dream of. So, you can visit the dramatic mountain ranges of the High Atlas and Anti-Atlas within half an hour’s drive to the north and south respectively. And it takes only an hour to reach the famous Tiz n Test Pass or the Atlantic Ocean.
Walking in the High Atlas Mountains
We offer a variety of guided walks often in places rarely visited by other tourists. Each walk is tailored to match your level of fitness. Examples include:
High Atlas: Imoulass, Afensou, Mentaga and Irguiten Valleys. A variety of options in this little visited and verdant part of the High Atlas. So, whilst walking you see panoramic views of the peaks, pass through oasis gardens, a gorge with pools where you can swim, and beautiful traditional villages. Rivers are often fed by underground springs, so the water is warm! And the gorge with its river, often the colour of glacier mints, is particularly idyllic.
Berber Villages of the High Atlas Mountains: Gentle walking through villages, small fields and olive groves. Visit Berber households and cottage industry in the High Atlas Mountains in an area not normally visited by foreigners. So you gain an insight into rural Moroccan culture and may choose to support one of our community projects and take mint tea and a tasty tagine in a Berber home.
Tiz n Test Pass: A drive via the orange groves of the Souss Valley to the top of this spectacular mountain pass (2011 metres), widely held to be the finest in Morocco. Then a half day trek.
Walking in Morocco – the Anti Atlas Mountains
Oases and the Anti Atlas Mountains: Gain an insight into subsistence farming and wildlife in the arid landscapes of valleys, luxuriant layers of vegetation in the oases and mountains bordering the Sahara and experience some of the community projects we are involved in: the bee project and a women’s cooperative. Highlights include hilltop agadirs (Berber “castles”) and kasbahs; charcoal production; the majestic Agave plants which produce cactus silk; spectacular tufa deposits, the erosion of which has produced fascinating landforms; wadis and alluvial fans created by floods in the desert.
Jbel Sirwa and Taliouine, the Saffron Capital of Morocco: Superb dramatic landscapes of the eastern Anti-Atlas where the vestiges of igneous activity in the distant geological past make it a particularly attractive place to walk. Best times to visit are mid-autumn because that is when the harvest of saffron takes place or early spring when the almond trees are in blossom.
Gentle Walking in Morocco – at the Coast
Both the following places are in the Souss Massa National Park.
Massa Lagoon: Visit one of the most renowned sites for bird life in Morocco, with Said, our experienced and very knowledgeable bird watching guide.
Best to visit between October and May because there are migrants as well as endemic species. Visit the remote beach at its end.
Tifnit: Visit this fishing village towards the north end of the north end of the Park.
Atlantic Coast and Souss Estuary: A flexible itinerary starts about 7 kms South of Agadir – an area with beaches, dunes, the estuary on the edge of the National Park (renowned for bird watching) with options to ride camels or Arab horses, visit a craft village, the marina, fishing port and the kasbah viewpoint.
Tamri and the Atlantic Coast North of Agadir: Wild beaches, cliffs and dunes of the Atlantic coast North of Agadir, including opportunities to see the endangered bald ibis at Tamri or near the Cap Rhir lighthouse.
All these visits are made all the more special by our experienced and knowledgeable drivers and guides.
